TREND OBSERVATIONS (12/18/2020)

Takeaways this week:

Takeaway 1: BITCOIN's INSTITUTIONAL ADOPTION and CONCESSION is picking up speed. The contrarian in me would be wary and volatility should be expected near-term but it's out of the bottle now. Like all new ideas and technologies, it takes a generation of development to work.

Takeaway 2: The world's dangers will drive biotech and defense industries, and I assume there is a space at the intersection between these two subjects. There has been a rising strategic awareness of the cross-currents between the two fields in national defense and economic development policy.

Is there a Biotech Race in the making in terms of R&D for the 2020s and beyond?

CHART

The NEW 20 include the following chart(s):

Market and societal pressures are pent-up and gaming is a beneficiary. These impulses must be sublimated and expressed in many ways. Games are an outlet. They are also the pathway to new forms of media, software and tool-making.

**The market's Animal spirits are driving games, gaming and gambling. Look past Dave Portnoy.

Look past gambling. Gambling is a game. Look past the bets. The bets are built on software.**

Look to gaming, eSports, collectibles as a speculative game, and imagine how software tools and new augmented and virtual environments will grow from what used to "rot your brain". Think about Josh Wolfe (of Lux Capital) and Andreesen Horowitz' coverage of games, gaming, eSports, A/R + V/R. It all goes into the same pot - manifestations of a broader secular trend.

Think about Slack as a failed gaming startup that pivoted into a platform. Remember that discord started with gaming and understand it's become so much more. "Superhuman" was built by a game designer. The film "The Martian" was based on a book written by a game designer.

Toys become tools. Imagine past "vice" investments and think about the tech could be repurposed. The real "pony" or team to bet on is the economic impact of new businesses and new "TAMs".

This is just one humble chart, but it's enough of a starting point for you to trade with and then think about the broader trends, associated even loosely but still relevant, that could rise in the 2020s.

Think past the gambling. Look past the gaming and see an "Infinite Game" unfolding.
